Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have undertaken a multifaceted project to study laser welding using IPG high power YLS lasers and Multi-Axis Standard. Their goal was to develop a tool to assist manufacturers with welding new projects. Many companies do not have the internal resources to develop this knowledge through trial and error. NIST’s studies provide a set of conditions and parameters than can be easily applied through computer models. That way manufacturers don’t have to start from square one.
